L-Menthol

L-Menthol is a high-purity monoterpene alcohol and a key ingredient in the flavor and fragrance industry. Extracted from natural peppermint oil or synthetically produced, it exists as colorless crystals or a white crystalline powder with a strong, refreshing mint odor and a cooling sensation. Insoluble in water but highly soluble in organic solvents, it exhibits unique physical and chemical properties, including a melting point around 42°C and a specific rotation range of -49° to -51°.
Its primary applications span food, cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, and daily chemical industries. In the food sector, it acts as a flavor enhancer in candies, beverages, mouthwash, and oral care products, providing a fresh and cooling taste. In cosmetics and personal care, it is widely used in skincare lotions, balms, and aromatic oils for its soothing and cooling effects, alleviating skin irritation and itching. In pharmaceuticals, L-menthol serves as a topical analgesic and counterirritant, commonly found in pain-relief balms, cough drops, and muscle rubs to relieve minor aches and pains. It also functions as a fragrance agent in detergents, soaps, and air fresheners, delivering a long-lasting, fresh scent.
Our company supplies premium quality L-menthol with consistent purity, available in various grades to meet the diverse needs of global customers. Backed by a stable supply chain and strict quality control, we ensure reliable delivery and full compliance documentation.

Product Description

L-Menthol is a high-purity monoterpene alcohol with a distinct fresh mint aroma and strong cooling effect, available as colorless crystals or white crystalline powder.

It is widely used in food, cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, and daily chemical industries, with excellent solubility in organic solvents and stable chemical properties.

In food and oral care, it is added to candies, chewing gum, toothpaste, and mouthwash to deliver a refreshing mint flavor and cool sensation, effectively masking unpleasant tastes and freshening breath.

In cosmetics and skincare, it acts as a soothing agent in lotions, balms, and after-sun products, relieving skin irritation and itching while providing a cooling comfort.

For pharmaceutical use, it serves as a topical analgesic and counterirritant in pain-relief creams, cough drops, and nasal inhalers, helping to ease minor muscle aches and respiratory discomfort.

It also functions as a fragrance ingredient in soaps, detergents, and air fresheners, offering a long-lasting fresh scent.

For usage, in food and oral care formulations, L-menthol is typically incorporated at 0.05–0.5% to achieve the desired cooling effect without overpowering the product.

In cosmetics and pharmaceuticals, the dosage ranges from 0.5–5%, depending on the product type and intended effect.

It should be stored in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and strong oxidizing agents to maintain its crystalline structure and quality stability during transportation and storage.

Van Deemter Equation Impact

H = A + B/u + Cu

Higher viscosity (MeOH) → lower optimal flow rate → longer runtime.

Buffer Selection: Why NH₄HCO₃?
  • Volatile: MS-compatible (evaporates without residue)
  • pH range: 6.5–8.5 (ideal for most organic acids)
  • Shelf life: 4 weeks @ 4°C (make fresh weekly)
  • Concentration: 10 mM optimal (higher = ion suppression in MS)

Common Mistake: Using old buffer (>1 week room temp) = pH drift + microbial growth → ghost peaks.

Gradient Problem From The Lab

Selectivity by changing the buffer

You have 3 critical peak pairs. Phosphate pH 3 gives Rs=1.4. You need to reach 2.0. Change the pH or the buffer type?

Our Gradient Strategy

  • Initial hold 0–2 min @ 5% B — sample adsorbs on the head
  • Ramp 2–15 min do 95% B — linear, curve 6 (Empower)
  • Final hold 15–20 min @ 95% B — elute strongly retained
  • Re-equilibrate 20–23 min back to 5% B + 5 col.volumes

Prep Mistakes That Ruined The Run

Eksport chromatogramu do raportu

Your boss wants a PNG of the chromatogram for a presentation. You only have ChemStation with a .ch file. How to get from .ch → PNG?

Sample Prep Protocol

  1. Dissolve 10 mg of sample in 10 mL of mobile phase (initial composition)
  2. Sonikuj 5 min → vortex 30 s
  3. Filtruj 0.22 μm PTFE (nie PVDF — adsorbuje!)
  4. Transfer 1 mL do HPLC vial z septum PTFE/silikon
  5. Przechowuj 4°C max 48h

Why Filter 0.22 μm?

Particles >0.22 μm clog the column inlet frit. Pressure rises +50 bar per 100 injections. Column lifetime drops from 2000 to 500 injections. Filter cost: 2 PLN. Column cost: 1800 PLN.

48 godzin stracone na niewidoczne piki

Anna K., studentka 2. rok, PW 2024-11-15 Poziom 2/5
Wat er gebeurde:

Day 1 — I prepared the sample, injected it, baseline flat. Day 2 — I repeated it 6× with different samples. Nothing. Wave check? Professor: "Take a look at the DAD scan". λ_max = 214 nm, and I had 254 nm set.

💡 Lekcja:

ALWAYS run a UV scan of an unknown compound BEFORE the method. 254 nm = aromatics only. 210 nm = universal. Time saved: 2 days of work.

Incorrect integration — publication rejected

Kasia M., PhD Analytical Chemistry, UJ 2025-06-03 Poziom 4/5
Wat er gebeurde:

Submission to JPBA. Reviewer 2: „Peak at 12.4 min shows manual integration, but baseline slope suggests co-elution". I had to revalidate the whole method. 3 months of delay.

💡 Lekcja:

Manual integration = a red flag for reviewers. Solve CO-ELUTION in methods dev, not in integration. Optimise the gradient instead of force-fitting the peak.
