Acid washing for rust removal: Used to remove the oxide layer (rust) on the surface of steel, it is a key process in the production of hot-rolled steel plates, wire rods, and tubes.

Metal surface treatment: Before electroplating, enameling, and other processes, it is used to activate the metal surface.

Chemical production and inorganic salt manufacturing (the largest usage field):

By-product of chlor-alkali industry: It is the main co-product in the production of caustic soda and chlorine by ion-exchange membrane method or diaphragm method.

Inorganic chlorides production: Used to produce various inorganic salts such as ferric chloride, aluminum chloride, calcium chloride, and zinc chloride.

Organic synthesis: As a catalyst or reactant, it is used to produce vinyl chloride, chloroform, pharmaceutical intermediates, pesticides, dyes, etc.

Ion exchange resin regeneration: Widely used in boiler water treatment and pure water preparation systems for the regeneration of cation exchange resins.

Food and pharmaceutical industry:

Food processing: As a food additive (acid regulator), it is used in starch hydrolysis (producing glucose, fructose syrup), monosodium glutamate (glutamic acid sodium) production, soy sauce brewing, etc., and must comply with GB 1886.9-2016 “Food Safety National Standards – Food Additives – Hydrochloric Acid”.

Pharmaceutical manufacturing: Used to adjust pH value, synthesize various drugs (such as vitamins, antibiotics), and as biochemical reagents.

Electronic and semiconductor industry (high-growth field):

Wafer cleaning and etching: Electronic-grade high-purity hydrochloric acid is a key chemical in semiconductor manufacturing for cleaning silicon wafers, removing oxides and metal impurities, with extremely low requirements for metal ion content (ppb level).

Photovoltaic industry: Used in the cleaning and purification processes of polysilicon and monocrystalline silicon production.

Water treatment and environmental protection:

pH regulator: Used to adjust the pH value of industrial wastewater and municipal sewage to meet discharge or subsequent treatment requirements. Flue gas desulfurization: In some wet desulfurization processes, it is used as an absorbent.

Feng Y, Zhang W, Liu Y, Xue J, Zhang S, Li Z. A Simple, Sensitive, and Reliable Method for the Simultaneous Determination of Multiple Antibiotics in Vegetables through SPE-HPLC-MS/MS. Molecules : A Journal of Synthetic Chemistry and Natural Product Chemistry. 2018;23:1953. doi:10.3390/molecules23081953
Antibiotics, widely used in livestock breeding, enter the environment through animal manure because of incomplete absorption in animals, especially the farmland ecosystem. Therefore, antibiotics may be adsorbed by plants and even become hazardous to human health through the food chain. In this study, a simple, sensitive, and reliable method was developed for the simultaneous determination of eleven antibiotics, including four sulfonamides, two tetracyclines, three fluoroquinolones, tylosin, and chloramphenicol in different vegetable samples using SPE-HPLC-MS/MS. Vegetable samples were extracted by acetonitrile added with hydrochloric acid (125:4, v/v). The extracts were enriched by circumrotating evaporation, and then cleaned through SPE on a hydrophilic-lipophilic balance (HLB) cartridge. All compounds were determined on a C18 reverse phase column through HPLC-MS/MS. The mean recoveries of 11 antibiotics from spiked samples of vegetables ranged from 71.4% to 104.0%. The limits of detection and quantification were 0.06–1.88 μg/kg and 0.20–6.25 μg/kg, respectively. The applicability of this technique demonstrated its good selectivity, high efficiency, and convenience by the analysis of 35 vegetable samples available from a vegetable greenhouse. Antibiotic residues in vegetables have aroused wide concern from the public. Therefore, standards should be established for antibiotic residues in vegetables to ensure food safety and human health.

Choline salicylate (CS) as a derivative of acetylsalicylic acid is commonly used in different drug forms. In medicine, it is applied topically to inflammation of the oral cavity mucosa and in laryngology. However, this substance in the form of an ionic liquid has not been investigated enough. There are no literature studies on stability tests constituting a stage of pre-formulation research. HPLC (Nucleosil C18, 4.6 × 150 mm, 5 μm; methanol-water-acetic acid 60:40:1, 230 nm or 270 nm) and UV (276 nm) methods for the determination of CS in 2% (g/mL) aqueous solutions were developed. Under stress conditions, CS susceptibility to hydrolytic degradation in aqueous medium, hydrochloric acid, sodium hydroxide, and hydrogen peroxide, and the effect of light on the stability of CS solutions were studied with HPLC analysis. The degradation degree of CS and the purity of the solutions were also tested. Choline salicylate has been qualified as practically stable in neutral and acid media, stable in an alkaline medium, very stable in an oxidizing environment, and photolabile in solution. The HPLC-MS/MS method was used to identify 2,3- and 2,5-dihydroxybenzoic acids as degradation products of CS under the tested conditions.

Back Pressure~150 bar~210 bar (+40%)
UV Cutoff190 nm205 nm

Van Deemter Equation Impact

H = A + B/u + Cu

Higher viscosity (MeOH) → lower optimal flow rate → longer runtime.

Buffer Selection: Why NH₄HCO₃?
  • Volatile: MS-compatible (evaporates without residue)
  • pH range: 6.5–8.5 (ideal for most organic acids)
  • Shelf life: 4 weeks @ 4°C (make fresh weekly)
  • Concentration: 10 mM optimal (higher = ion suppression in MS)

Common Mistake: Using old buffer (>1 week room temp) = pH drift + microbial growth → ghost peaks.

Prep Mistakes That Ruined The Run

Why does my chromatogram look like a cardiogram?

The baseline jumps ±10 mAU, you see peaks but also „humps" between them. Integration is impossible.

Sample Prep Protocol

  1. Dissolve 10 mg of sample in 10 mL of mobile phase (initial composition)
  2. Sonikuj 5 min → vortex 30 s
  3. Filtruj 0.22 μm PTFE (nie PVDF — adsorbuje!)
  4. Transfer 1 mL do HPLC vial z septum PTFE/silikon
  5. Przechowuj 4°C max 48h

Why Filter 0.22 μm?

Particles >0.22 μm clog the column inlet frit. Pressure rises +50 bar per 100 injections. Column lifetime drops from 2000 to 500 injections. Filter cost: 2 PLN. Column cost: 1800 PLN.

Analiza powypadkowa — prawdziwe historie porażek Wnioski

Prawdziwe wpadki chemików — co się stało, co pomogło, czego unikać.

Ghost peaks w ostatnim dniu stability

Dr. Tomasz W., PhD pharmaceutical 2024-08-22 Poziom 4/5
Co się stało:

Day 90 stability pull. 6 batch × 2 repeats. W próbce widzę duplikaty peaków z poprzedniego dnia. OOS opened. 4 dni investigation. Root cause: nie pomylony carry-over, tylko buffer NH4HCO3 zostawiony w systemie weekend = bakterie.

💡 Lekcja:

NIGDY nie zostawiaj buforu w systemie >3 dni. Zawsze flush z 80% ACN/20% H2O przed weekendem. Koszt lekcji: 4 dni pracy + 3 batch release delay.

Incorrect integration — publication rejected

Kasia M., PhD Analytical Chemistry, UJ 2025-06-03 Poziom 4/5
Co się stało:

Submission to JPBA. Reviewer 2: „Peak at 12.4 min shows manual integration, but baseline slope suggests co-elution". I had to revalidate the whole method. 3 months of delay.

💡 Lekcja:

Manual integration = a red flag for reviewers. Solve CO-ELUTION in methods dev, not in integration. Optimise the gradient instead of force-fitting the peak.
